Le Cirque Arcanus Is the Must-See of Wizarding Paris at Universal Epic Universe

For most Harry Potter fans flocking to the new wizarding-themed area at Universal Epic Universe, the Battle at the Ministry ride is likely at the top of their to-do list. However, a different wizarding attraction has captured our hearts: the Cirque Arcanus show, which, after our first viewing, has solidified itself in our books as a must-see in wizarding Paris.

The show is based on Le Cirque Arcanus, the traveling circus seen in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. In the movie, one of its billed attractions is the Maledictus Nagini, who morphs into snake form in front of audiences at each stop. She and Credence, who somehow finds himself working for ringmaster Skender, escape, setting free magical beasts as they do so. Notably, Newt Scamander tames the Zouwu with a cat toy and lures it into the safety of his suitcase. In the Epic Universe stage show, Newt has rescued all the magical beasts from Le Cirque Arcanus, which, as a result, has been seeing lower attendance. Meanwhile, Skender schemes to steal back Newt’s case and reintroduce the creatures into his show.

The Cirque Arcanus show is located in the center of wizarding Paris, where the streets intersect. Guests enter the queue through a traditional-looking circus tent, which seems much larger on the inside thanks to strategically placed empty building facades behind it.

During the preshow, we’re introduced to Skender and his assistant, Gwen, who are portrayed by live actors, as well as two house-elves, who appear on a screen behind them. We then learn that Skender has stolen Newt’s suitcase, which Gwen discovers and opens, accidentally letting loose Dougal the Demiguise.

After the preshow, guests funnel into a full-size theater, again, expertly hidden from view on the outside streets. The circus begins as you would imagine: There’s an aerial act and a clown blowing magical bubbles. It’s what happens next that leaves a lasting impression. One thing leads to another, and Gwen goes inside Newt’s suitcase, taking the audience with her. As the stage lifts up to reveal the menagerie of creatures inside, the theme music from the Fantastic Beasts films swells and the sounds of birds and other creatures surround the audience on all sides. A mixture of animatronics, screens, and practical effects work seamlessly together to make the audience feel like Jacob Kowalski in the first Fantastic Beasts film: awed and enchanted by this oasis where creatures can exist in safety and harmony. Newt Scamander himself even makes an appearance, the role reprised by Eddie Redmayne.

We don’t want to spoil too much of the magic because this truly is a show you must experience for yourself, but know that we left with a few tears in our eyes and all the warm, fuzzy feelings. It felt good to venture inside Newt’s case once more and to see him and all his magical creatures again after all these years.

If you are visiting Epic Universe, whatever you do, do not skip Le Cirque Arcanus! Take a step inside the big top. You’ll be glad you did.
